Auditor
Merritt on Health
Care
Times are tough, and the cost of health care
is skyrocketing. You live within a budget -- and state
government should do so as well. During these
challenging economic times, it is more important than ever
for state government to spend your tax dollars wisely.
As State
Auditor, Leslie Merritt is working to ensure that state
government spends your money wisely -- especially when it
comes to state-sponsored health care initiatives.
Auditor Merritt Takes Action to Improve Health Insurance for Children
A report by Auditor Merritt revealed that the
state could save nearly $16 million and use the money to
provide about 10,000 more children with

Auditor Merritt Takes Action to Reform the State Mental Health System
Auditor Merritt has exposed fraud, waste and
abuse in our state's mental health system -- an area in
which such abuses impact some of our state's most vulnerable
citizens. At the
Albemarle Mental Health Center,
the director was paid more than twice the standard salary.
At that same center, an administrative assistant was paid a
higher salary than Governor Mike Easley. Auditor
Merritt called for a statewide system of fiscal management
for all of the state's 25 mental health agencies and called
on the state Department of Health and Human Services to
require more detailed accountability from the agencies.
