State-Funded Non-Profits

State-funded non-profits receive hundreds of millions of our tax dollars When State Auditor Leslie Merritt took office in early 2005, he discovered that state-funded non-profits were not being held accountable for how they spend our money.  Auditor Merritt took action to ensure that state-funded non-profits file the required reports telling us how they spend our tax dollars.

Auditor Merritt Takes action to Hold State-Funded

Non-Profits Accountable

The News & Observer, April 18, 2005 (three months after Auditor Merritt took office):  "North Carolina awarded $580 million in grants last year (2004) to 3,000 nonprofit groups. More than 1,800 of those groups received enough state money that they are required to file financial reports or audits, but auditors won't know how it was all spent for another year."  more...

News14, May 24, 2005"A state auditor's warning appears to be paying off.  Nearly 900 nonprofit organizations have filed required financial reports with the state since being warned last month about missing their deadlines.  State Auditor Les Merritt says about 200 of the roughly 1800 nonprofits in the state still have not furnished the reports."  more...

Helping State-Funded Non-Profits Comply

When State Auditor Leslie Merritt took office, there was no program in place to educate state-funded non-profits on how to comply with rules which ensure that they properly disclose how they spend our tax dollars.  Auditor Merritt took action, launching a program that has now educated well over 10,000 personnel from state-funded non-profits and other grant recipients on how to comply with those rules and properly disclose how they are spending our money.
